Photo Tip of the Day | Good Bye Cheese

As I was editing through this super sweet families photos, I couldn’t help but notice the huge difference in the two photos. So what did I do differently in the second image? First I changed my position to be more on their level. Good tip right? Well, that is not what struck me. What did, was the difference in expressions. The first image, the parents were trying to help by saying “Look here, Smile! No, not that smile, your real smile” You know, all of the typical things that allot of parents do during a session. Happens all the time. I could see that the girls were trying hard to listen to their parents and it was only resulting was forced smiles. So, I distracted the girls from the parents with something fun to do. A little something that works like a charm. Once the girls were distracted, they relaxed and then it was time to take the photo. This resulted in a much more genuine smile.  My clients will often hear me tell them to relax and have fun. I also tell them that what ever they are feeling during those photos will show in the pictures. This below is a perfect example of what I mean.

So now let’s talk Christmas! Lot’s of memories to be captured! Lot’s of moments to be remembered. What would you rather have your kids remember, being forced to smile or making them laugh with fun interaction? So my challenge to all of you sweet parents out there…. No more “Say Cheese” “Smile” “Look here”  Instead,  make a joke to get the smile!
