We are very excited (and a little nervous) for 2015! When I first started to tell family and friends about the new business name, I didn’t receive the excitement that I had hoped for. Instead, people were questioning my decision for the change. They said it was a bad move and that I would regret it. At first, I was upset at the reaction. But sticking with this decision only validated for me that it is the right thing to do. And for that reason, I thank you family and friends for your honest reaction.
In 2006 when A. Tappen Photography first came about, it was because I was passionate about photography. Now, here in 2015, we are changing the name because we are passionate about people and their stories. Enter the new name SEAGLASS PHOTOGRAPHY!
For the past couple of years we have thrown around different names, none of which really stood out. It has been a process to get where we are and know what we want. It is easy to get wrapped up in being a business and doing things the way we think we “should” or “what is trending” as opposed to what we love.
During the past year, we have watched many of our clients suffer the loss of a loved one. Husbands/Fathers/Daughters/Sons taken way too soon. It breaks my heart knowing that the children they leave behind will only know their daddy/mommy by the stories they are told and the photos that they see. This made me take a good look at my own life and what we provide for our clients. For the past 8 years, I have worked on creating that “perfect” image for our clients. The perfect outfit, the perfect hair and the perfect smile. My goal with each session was to get that perfect photo of everyone looking at the camera smiling. Because that’s what mom “wants” right? I would work hours editing hair, skin, and making people look perfect. I have come to realize that 10 years from now, no one is going to care about “how” they looked. Future generations are probably still going to make fun of the hair and outfits. Instead, what is important is to show our future generations WHO we are and the moments that we share. Even the simplest of moments, like tying your kids shoes, will show the love that you have for that child. When they are all grown up, you will miss taking care of them in the most simplest of ways.
My newest movie obsession is UP. In the movie, there is a part when the little boy is talking about his dad and how they played a simple game of counting cars. The boy then said something that really hit home, “That might sound Boring, but I think the boring stuff is the stuff I remember the most”. Such truth about how kids think! We don’t want kids remembering how they had to wear an outfit that they hated. We want them to remember daddy chasing them around and mommy hugging on them. If you have yet to see the movie, I highly recommend it!
So why the name SEAGLASS? Seaglass is the perfect description for what we now want to accomplish. While Seaglass is something beautiful to look at, there is a story behind it. What was this piece of glass before? Where did it come from? How many years did it take to lose it’s sharp edges? This is what I think of when ever we find a rare gem of seaglass on the beach. This is exactly what we want to provide for our clients. Not only beautiful images, but a story to go along with it. We feel that everyday moments are just as big and important as weddings and newborns. Every day is a gift and should be cherished.
We know that 2015 is going to be filled with lots of hope! We can already see it in some of our clients. We are excited as 2 wonderful women who have been trying for years to conceive are expecting their miracle baby! How exciting is that!! There are many new things to come with Seaglass Photography. So , please stay tuned as the next couple of weeks as we will be introducing our new website and sessions. It’s a journey that you won’t want to miss!
